For a converted Epson desktop printer, the best DTF RIP depends on your computer and your budget. On a Mac, or if you want to start for free, ZoroPrint is the only option in this list (free for one printer). On Windows with a bigger budget, CADlink / Fiery Digital Factory has the strongest white underbase tools, AcroRIP has the longest printer list, Flexi DTF Pro adds design tools and roll printers, and two more Windows-only options come up in the same searches: Kothari NeoRip, whose patented white underbase is the strongest here but whose converted-Epson support stops at the XP-15000, and EKPrint Studio, with deep white-ink controls and a printer list built on older DTG machines.

You converted an Epson L1800, L805 or ET-8550 to DTF, or you are about to. The printer is the cheap part. The RIP decides whether the white sits under the colour, whether the tanks print the colours you think they do, and how much film you waste per order. This post compares the seven RIPs people actually use on converted Epson desktop printers in 2026, with public prices and honest trade-offs.

What a DTF RIP actually does

The Epson driver was made for paper. It knows nothing about white ink, and after a conversion it still thinks two of your tanks hold light cyan and light magenta. A DTF RIP replaces the driver and does six jobs:

  • White underbase. It builds a white layer from the transparency of your PNG, so white goes only where the design is, and prints it under the colour.
  • Choke. It shrinks the white a fraction of a millimetre inside the colour edge, so small misregistration shows colour and not a white rim. Most “white halo” complaints come from a missing choke or a soft-edged file; see why your DTF transfer has a white halo.
  • Channel mapping. It tells the printer which physical tank holds white and which holds each colour. Get this wrong and the print comes out blue or pink. A channel test on film shows the real layout in five minutes.
  • Talking ESC/P2. Epson printers take raw ESC/P2 commands. A DTF RIP sends them directly, with its own dot sizes and ink amounts, instead of going through the paper driver.
  • Nesting. It packs many designs onto one sheet or roll length (a gang sheet), so you pay for less film and powder.
  • Colour management. It applies an ICC profile and ink limits so the colour on the shirt is close to the colour on screen.

Every RIP below does the basics. The differences are price, operating system, how the licence works, how much of the setup it automates, and how well it fills a sheet.

ZoroPrint

ZoroPrint is the RIP we build, so read this section with that in mind. Version 0.4.0 came out on 21 September 2026 for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel); the Windows 10/11 and Linux builds followed on 24 September, all on the download page.

It talks ESC/P2 to the printer over USB or the network, with no Epson driver and no dongle. The licence lives on your account and works 30 days offline. The white underbase is automatic from transparency, with choke, highlight white and less white under dark colours. Ink settings are per tank, there is a channel test on film, and a “Wrong colours?” wizard fixes the mapping for you. It imports ICC v2 and v4 profiles, sets ink limits, auto-nests a sheet or roll with cost per transfer, and runs a preflight that flags semi-transparent edges, low DPI, near-white backgrounds and hairlines. It also has a hot folder and reads HEIC, PSD, TIFF, WebP and PNG.

  • Pros: free plan (one printer, 30 jobs a month, 10 images per sheet, no card); the only Mac RIP here; no dongle; updates included on every plan; 0% commission; 30-day money-back on paid plans.
  • Cons: the supported printers are only the L805, L800, L1800, R1390/1400/1410, Artisan 1430/1500W, ET-8550 and L8180. The L8050, L18050, ET-8500, L8160, SC-P700, SC-P900 and XP-15000 are experimental and not yet confirmed on hardware. The macOS, Windows and Linux builds are not code-signed yet.

AcroRIP 11

AcroRIP is the RIP most converted L1800s ship with, and it has the longest list of printers in this comparison, from the R1390 up to the ET-18100 and SC-P700, with the SC-P900 in the separate wide edition. If you own an unusual Epson model, that list matters. It does one-pass white and colour, and it can substitute a clogged channel.

  • Pros: very wide printer support; widely known, so many sellers and forums can help with settings. Free updates inside V11 and a 15-day trial.
  • Cons: Windows only; it runs on Windows 11, but the vendor recommends not upgrading. It needs a USB dongle, with separate editions for desktop and wide format. White settings are manual, there is no auto-nesting, and V10 owners had to buy V11 as a new product.

CADlink / Fiery Digital Factory 12

Digital Factory is the professional pick for Windows shops. Its white tools are the strongest here: single-pass underbase and highlight, colour removal, and a FluidMask add-on ($195). It supports 40+ Epson models, with wide format as a separate edition, and version 12 added a built-in gang sheet builder.

  • Pros: mature colour engine; strong underbase control; broad printer list; gang sheets built in.
  • Cons: Windows 10/11 only, and Apple Silicon Macs are explicitly unsupported. Each extra printer is +$200, major upgrades are paid (V11 to V12 is $222), and the licence is tied to one computer. Channel mapping is manual. No trial.

Flexi DTF Pro

Flexi DTF Pro from SAi is a design suite and a RIP in one, built for sign shops. If you already design all day in Flexi, having the RIP in the same program is a real advantage. It supports Epson desktop printers and DACEN XP600 / i3200 roll printers, has Smart Knockout for the white layer, and does gang sheets with design tools.

  • Pros: design and RIP in one app; roll printer support; updates included in the subscription; 7-day trial.
  • Cons: $99.99 a month or $899.99 a year (first year $449.99). Windows only. Channel mapping is manual.

BlackBox RIP

BlackBox is a small Windows RIP built around the newer Epson models: L18050, L8050, L8180, L8160, ET-8550 and SC-P700/P900, plus the older L800/L805, L1800 and R1390/1410. Its per-channel ink settings and layers are well thought out; ZoroPrint's ink settings table was modelled on it.

  • Pros: early support for the new Epson models; detailed per-channel control.
  • Cons: price not published (you ask on Telegram or by e-mail); Windows only; basic layout instead of nesting; unclear update policy; no public trial.

Kothari NeoRip

NeoRip from Kothari InfoTech is the RIP that ships with factory DTG and DTF machines — Epson F2000 to F3070, Ricoh Ri, M&R — and it is priced like capital equipment: $849.95 for the DTF edition, $1,200 for the F2100 and $3,400 for the F3070. Its white underbase is the one feature on this page that genuinely beats everything else. It is patented: instead of building the underbase from transparency alone, it reads the media colour and the file, so white goes only where it is needed and thins out on dark garments and highlights. It has been doing that since 2006.

  • Pros: the strongest underbase engine here; step & repeat layout, XML job tickets and a barcode workflow for production; support comes with the machine when you buy it as a bundle.
  • Cons: $849.95 and up, licensed per printer model and sold through distributors rather than downloaded. Windows 7 or later only, on a USB dongle, with a 21-day trial that is a $100 dongle you send back. Profile update packs are paid, about $50 each. On a converted Epson the only model with a Kothari print driver is the XP-15000 — the L1800, L805, R1390 and ET-8550 are not supported, and those are the models most people convert.

EKPrint Studio

EKPrint Studio from EK Digital is the DTG RIP that DTF shops adopted years ago, and it is still the answer for anyone running an older Epson from the P or R series. Its white ink controls are the closest to ours on this page: underbase choke from 1 to 20 px, a highlight level, a content-based underbase that lays more white under light colours and less under dark ones, and a white mixer. There is no dongle.

  • Pros: 30-day trial with printing enabled; the deepest white-ink control set among the Windows-only tools here; no dongle; covers an older Epson generation, P400 to R3000.
  • Cons: Windows only, and the vendor's own requirements page still lists Windows XP or 2000 and a CD drive. The licence is a license.txt file tied to the network card of one PC and requested by e-mail, with three activations per licence. No Mac version, no gang sheet and no nesting (one image at a time), and no channel-mapping diagnosis. The update and version policy is not published. Prices run from $199 for LITE to $499 for the full version, with list prices up to $998.99.

How to choose a DTF RIP

Start from your situation, not from the feature list.

  • You work on a Mac. ZoroPrint is the only RIP in this list that runs on macOS, on Apple Silicon and Intel. The others need Windows, and CADlink explicitly does not support Apple Silicon. More in DTF RIP for Mac.
  • First printer, small budget. Start on ZoroPrint Free: one printer, 30 jobs a month, no card. If it works with your printer, Solo is $6 a month billed yearly, or $8 monthly. Check your model is in the supported list first, for example the Epson L1800 or the L805. More on starting without paying in free DTF RIP software.
  • Several printers in one shop. ZoroPrint Shop is $14 a month billed yearly ($168) for up to 5 computers, with no per-printer fee. On CADlink every extra printer is +$200. If you are on Windows, need the strongest white tools and the budget is there, CADlink is a solid choice.
  • Roll printer. Flexi DTF Pro supports DACEN XP600 / i3200 roll printers today. In ZoroPrint, roll printers go through a PrintExp export on the Production plan, which is on the roadmap.
  • Uncommon or older Epson model on Windows. AcroRIP's printer list is the longest, so check it first.

Whatever you pick, work out what one transfer costs you in film, ink and powder before you set prices.

Watch out for cracked RIPs

Many converted printers are sold with a cracked copy of a paid RIP, most often AcroRIP. It looks like a free bonus. In practice you get no updates, no support when something breaks, and a real risk of malware, because cracked installers often ask you to turn off your antivirus. When a Windows update breaks the crack, your production stops and nobody is obliged to help.

If price is the reason, a free plan from a real vendor gives you the same starting point without those risks.

Try ZoroPrint free on your printer: one printer, 30 jobs a month, no card.
