Cleaning the capping station and wiper on a DTF Epson, every day

How often

Daily, at the end of the day. The manufacturer manuals and supplier guides we checked put cap and wiper cleaning in the daily column; a few say weekly. Daily is the safe choice: a quick swab takes about a minute, and a deeper clean with a cap flush once a week.

What you need

• Lint-free foam swabs. Not cotton buds: they leave fibres in the cap and on the nozzles.
• DTF cleaning solution. It flushes and clears minor clogs.
• Capping solution, if you use it. It keeps the cap wet overnight or over a short break. It does not unclog and must not be used to flush the head.
• Nitrile gloves and a paper towel under the work area.

Step by step

1. Move the head off the cap the way your model allows: a carriage-release or maintenance button on some kit printers, or with the printer off by gently releasing the carriage and sliding the head aside.
2. Wet a foam swab with cleaning solution. Wipe only the rubber lip of the cap and its edges, all the way round.
3. Clean both sides of the wiper blade without pulling it up. Bending it changes its height and it stops wiping evenly.
4. Wipe the edges around the head where ink builds up. Do not scrub the nozzle plate.
5. Put a few drops of cleaning solution in the cap, or capping solution for overnight.
6. Let the head return to the cap and switch off with the power button so it parks and seals.

Weekly, add a flush: fill the cap with cleaning solution and run one Head cleaning (Printer tab → Maintenance) so the cap and its tubes are rinsed and the head sits in clean fluid.

What not to use

• Alcohol or isopropyl near the head, the cap or the wiper. Sources disagree, but most manuals forbid it: it dries the ink faster and can harden the rubber. Keep it for dried ink on the encoder strip only.
• Cotton buds, tissues or anything that sheds fibres.
• Water poured near the electronics, or fluid running down onto the head cable.
• Force. The cap and wiper are soft rubber parts that sit at a precise height.

L1800: the two cap tubes

The L1800 cap has two tubes. The left one goes to the main drain. The right one goes to the waste manifold under the cap. If the right tube comes off, the cap loses suction and pulling with a syringe brings only air. Refitting it means lifting the capping station out.

When to replace

• Wiper: every 2–4 weeks in heavy use by one supplier’s figure, or as soon as the edge is frayed, hard or leaves streaks.
• Capping station: replace on symptoms. Frequent clogs despite cleaning, only air when you pull the waste line, foamy ink coming back out of the cap, grinding noises, or visible wear on the lip.

Safety and waste

Wear gloves; ink stains and the glycols in it irritate skin. Switch the printer off before you work near the head. Used swabs and towels go in a closed bag, and waste fluid into the waste bottle, not the drain. Check your ink’s safety data sheet for local disposal rules.
