DTF printer maintenance checklist: daily, weekly and monthly for a converted Epson

A converted desktop Epson rarely fails from printing. It fails from standing still: white pigment settles, the cap dries, and one morning the white is gone. This checklist is the routine most shops settle on. Print it and stick it next to the printer.

Kort fortalt
  1. Start of day: check room, waste bottle and ink levels, agitate the white, print a purge strip
  2. End of day: swab the cap lip and wiper, wet the cap, let the head park, cover the printer
  3. Weekly: deep-clean cap and wiper, empty the waste bottle, inspect tubes and dampers, clean rollers
  4. Monthly: inspect or replace white dampers and wiper, run the head alignment test, check the waste counter

Start of the day (about 5 minutes)

  1. Check the room: 40–60 % humidity and about 20–26 °C. A $15 hygrometer next to the printer is enough.
  2. Check the waste bottle: below 75 % full, and the tube end above the liquid, not in it. Remove the clip if you clamped the waste tube overnight.
  3. Check the ink: every tank above one third. Low ink lets air into the lines.
  4. Agitate the white. Bottles: turn them end over end, gently, for 30–60 s. Tanks or cartridges already connected to the head: rock them slowly for about 30 s. Then wait a minute so bubbles rise. If you have a stirrer or circulation, check that it is running.
  5. Printer idle for more than 24–48 hours? Rock the white dampers gently and pull 1–2 ml from the waste line with a small syringe. See dampers: shake, prime, replace.
  6. Print the purge strip as the first job: Printer tab → Maintenance → Add purge strip. If it shows gaps, print a Nozzle check. 90 % or more of each channel firing: print. Less: one Head cleaning, then check again.

After 2–3 cleanings in a row with no improvement, stop. More cleanings waste ink, fill the waste pads and pull air into the lines. The cause is usually mechanical: a dirty cap, a bad damper or an air leak.

End of the day (about 3 minutes)

  1. Move the head off the cap the way your model allows, with the printer off or in its maintenance position.
  2. With a foam swab wet with DTF cleaning solution, wipe the rubber lip of the cap, both sides of the wiper and the edges around the head. No alcohol, no cotton buds.
  3. Wet the cap: a few drops of cleaning solution, or capping solution if you use it overnight.
  4. Let the head return to the cap. Switch off with the power button, never by pulling the plug, so the head parks and seals.
  5. Cover the printer against dust and powder.

Every week (20–45 minutes)

  • Deep-clean the cap and wiper and flush the cap with cleaning solution. Look at the wiper edge: frayed or hard means replace.
  • Empty the waste bottle into a closed, labelled container. Never down the drain.
  • Look at the tubes and dampers: bubbles, a clear band at the top of the white tubes (settling), dark or uneven dampers.
  • Wipe the pinch and feed rollers with a dry microfibre cloth. Film residue makes them slip and misalign white and colour.
  • Encoder strip: sources disagree on the fluid. Start with distilled water on a lint-free cloth; use isopropyl alcohol only for dried ink. Never pull or kink the strip.

Every month

  • White dampers: inspect, and replace every 1–3 months depending on volume. Replace both at once.
  • Wiper: replace every 2–4 weeks in heavy use, or as soon as it stops wiping clean.
  • If white density drifts although the nozzle check is clean, flush the white lines with cleaning solution and refill.
  • Print the Head alignment test (Expert mode, Printer tab → Ink settings) at the resolution you use.
  • Check the waste counter or the maintenance box level. See waste ink pads and externalisation.
  • Back up your ZoroPrint presets and ICC profiles.

Safety

  • Wear nitrile gloves for refilling, swabbing and syringe work. Wear glasses when you pull with a syringe: a tube can pop off and spray.
  • Switch the printer off before you swab near the head, and keep fluid away from the head cable and boards.
  • Never leave bottles or cups on top of the printer.
  • Keep the powder shaker and curing oven away from the printer and in a ventilated spot. Curing fumes and loose powder settle on the encoder and cap.
