ICC profiles for DTF: what they do, where to get one, and the one rule that breaks colour

Colour on film is not colour on screen. The film does not absorb ink like paper, the white underbase changes saturation, and the powder and cure shift everything again. A profile measures that chain once and corrects every print for it.

Ink limits first

Film cannot take 400 % ink. Before any profile, cap each channel (C 80, M 80, Y 70, K 70 is the BlackBox default for the L805) and the total (220–280 %). Too much ink pools, cures slowly and cracks; too little looks washed out.

Which profile

  • The best profile is made for your exact ink, film, resolution and press temperature, from a printed target measured with an i1Pro or ColorMunki.
  • Second best: the profile that came with your kit or your previous RIP (for example the L1800-L805-L800 profile many BlackBox users have). ZoroPrint imports .icc and .icm files, v2 and v4.
  • No profile at all still works — the built-in separation is sane — but you will hand-tune saturation.

Rendering intent

  • Perceptual for photos: keeps tonal relationships, compresses the gamut gently.
  • Relative colorimetric for logos and flat colours: exact where the ink can reach, clipped where it cannot.

The rule that breaks colour

Convert once. If Photoshop already converted the file to a printer profile and the RIP converts it again, you get double correction: greys go blue, skin goes green. Keep files in sRGB (or AdobeRGB with the embedded profile) and let the RIP do the single conversion.
