DTF dampers: when to shake, prime or replace them

On an L805, L1800 or a CISS conversion, the damper is a small chamber with a flexible membrane and a filter, sitting on the head. It holds a buffer of ink and smooths the pressure between the tank and the nozzles. White ink sits still in it between prints, so it is where pigment settles first after the bottle. A healthy damper is full of ink, with no big air pocket, and its membrane is flat or slightly drawn in. Most ET-8550 and L8180 kits use dampers too, often with a white supply and return line for circulation.

In short
  1. After 24–48 hours idle, rock the white dampers gently by hand
  2. Prime from the waste line with a 5–10 ml syringe: slow pulls, stop as soon as ink flows
  3. Replace white dampers every 1–3 months, in pairs, then prime and print the channel test

Rocking the white dampers

  1. Do it with the printer off and the head parked on the cap.
  2. Rock each white damper gently by hand a few times. Do not squeeze the membrane.
  3. Pull 1–2 ml from the waste line (below) so the remixed ink reaches the nozzles.

Sources only say “gently shake the dampers”; the steps above are the practical version. When: after 24–48 hours idle, or every morning if you print a lot of white. Some experienced users refresh the white dampers after as little as 4 hours idle. After a long break, if the white in the damper has visibly separated, draw it out and replace it with fresh white.

Priming with a syringe

Park the head on the capping station, attach a syringe to the waste tube coming out of the cap, and pull gently. The cap seals the nozzle plate, so the suction draws ink from the dampers through the nozzles.

  1. Use a small syringe, 5–10 ml. Big syringes make too much suction.
  2. Pull slowly and steadily. Routine refresh: 1–2 ml. When a nozzle check fails: 2–5 ml.
  3. Stop as soon as ink flows. Hold a few seconds, then let go slowly.
  4. Run one normal Head cleaning and a Nozzle check. No strong or repeated cleanings for the next few hours.
  • Only air comes out: the cap is not sealing, or a cap tube has come off.
  • Nothing comes out at all: the capping station is clogged inside.
  • The damper membrane crinkles while you pull: the nozzles are opening. Good sign.

Never do this

  • Never push liquid into the nozzles or into a damper towards the head. Liquid that reaches the head cable can kill the head and the main board.
  • Never pull hard or use a large syringe on the head.
  • Wear nitrile gloves and glasses. Put the ink you pull into the waste bottle, not the sink.

Signs of a bad damper

  • Ink leaking, or a membrane that looks like a deflated balloon.
  • A large air pocket filling the chamber.
  • Dark or uneven colour inside: sediment or a dirty filter.
  • White prints fine on small designs but fades partway through large ones. One white damper is holding too much vacuum; swapping it fixes it.
  • Bubbles that keep coming back: a leaking damper, a loose fitting or a cracked tube.

When it is not the damper

White that drains back out of the dampers usually points to tank venting, a filter, fittings or the circulation, not the damper. A new damper cannot fix a tank problem. Gaps that move between nozzle checks mean air somewhere in the line.

Replacing dampers

  • White dampers: every 1–3 months depending on volume and on whether you have circulation. Sources range from monthly to every 3 months; some only replace on symptoms.
  • Colour dampers: when they show symptoms.
  • Replace both white dampers together; they are sold in sets.
  • Prime the new ones with the syringe method above, then print the channel test. Swapped tubes are easy to miss and print the wrong colour.
